But when it's an antioxidant in question, the AMA essentially declares it to be useless.
This particular distortion was achieved by counting the results of all the women who did NOT take the antioxidants. If you look at the total outcomes and include the women who took no antioxidants, then of course the results don't look very impressive. Click here to read our previously published article explaining this in more detail, or click here to read Byron Richards' assessment of the study which provides even more technical details. |

Notably, the research team also found when dietary fats were added to the mix, the antioxidant properties of vitamin C were neutralized, and the carcinogenic N-nitrosamine was formed.
"These results indicate that the presence of lipid can markedly alter the protective effects of antioxidants with respect to potentially carcinogenic nitrosative chemistry occurring in the human stomach, and illustrate how a diet rich in lipids can directly influence gastric biochemistry," said lead author Emilie Combet.
Lipids are substances of the fat group and are insoluble in water. |

| Action item: Demand retractions from the media
Today, NewsTarget is encouraging readers to contact major media outlets (contact information below) and demand a retraction and correction of their reporting on this particular antioxidant study. Media outlets need to check their facts before printing pro-pharma propaganda, and apparently there was little or no fact-checking conducted on this particular story. It seems as if nobody at Fox News, ABC News, Reuters, CNN and other media outlets even bothered to read the actual study beyond the abstract summary. |
| Thus, it is no surprise that the AMA's spin on this recent antioxidant study seemed designed to make vitamins look useless, thereby dissuading consumers from taking substances that ultimately compete with pharmaceuticals.
This behavior by the AMA is not unusual, nor unanticipated. What's shocking in all this is just how blindly the mainstream media swallowed the AMA's opinion on the facts of the study. According to virtually all the headlines printed in major media outlets, this study found vitamins E and C to be utterly worthless in preventing cardiovascular disease and stroke. |
| Today, NewsTarget announces a grassroots action campaign to demand retractions, corrections or clarifications from major media outlets -- Fox News, ABC News, CNN, Reuters, WebMD and more -- all of which printed incorrect, incomplete or misleading statements concerning the results of an antioxidant study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
The study clearly showed that women who took vitamins E and C experienced a statistically significant and rather remarkable reduction in risk of heart attacks (22 percent reduction), strokes (31 percent reduction) and other cardiovascular events. |

This is accomplished precisely through actions like this antioxidant study in which researchers pretending to conduct science send fabricated stories to a press pretending to report the news. When this kind of action is repeated a few hundred times a year, it leaves the population distrusting all nutritional supplements and believing that only synthetic patented chemicals (pharmaceuticals) can solve their health problems. |

In classic doublespeak, one press release blares, "Vitamin C and Other antioxidant Vitamins Provide No Protection from Cardiovascular Events." This particular distortion comes from the drug-touting Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. BWH goes on to state, "researchers... have found that there is no evidence of benefit or risk from vitamins C, E or beta-carotene on cardiovascular events for women at a high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD)."
Other medical associations and pharmaceutical-affiliated groups are making similar pronouncements. |
| And that's why their press release about the antioxidant study is, in my opinion, a fantastic example of outrageous intellectual dishonesty in medicine today. These people are so intoxicated by drug money influence that they calculate statistics like drunken sailors and practice medicine like quacks. We would all do well to flee from their dishonest proclamations and get back to the basics of preventing disease with nutrition, not treating it with high-profit synthetic chemicals. |

Goodman: It's a strong antioxidant formulation. As you know, antioxidants are very good for the body. We have our own natural antioxidants. I think of antioxidants as kind of police officers of the body -- they prevent free radicals from wreaking havoc in your body resulting in atherosclerosis, blockage of the pipes, malignancies, cancer, aging and all the processes that are related to having these free radicals in the body. Antioxidants inhibit them and suppress them. There are advantages besides just raising HDL here.
I think what's important is that you have to eat a good diet. |

Blue-green algae (available at most health-food stores) contains omega fatty acids and the antioxidant phycocyanin and works similarly to a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug like ibuprofen. Cranberries, blueberries, cherries, and blackberries are jam-packed with antioxidants called anthocyanins and polyphenols, which also have anti-inflammatory qualities. Leafy greens such as kale and spinach contain lutein, another superantioxidant. Cocoa carries flavonoids, particularly potent antioxidants that can zap free radicals and protect against inflammation. |

Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer. This comes back to inflammation. Many age-related diseases are caused by an immune system out of balance. Excessive or unnecessary inflammation accelerates heart disease, bone loss, Alzheimer's disease. Antioxidants found in vegetables and herbs are also important, because the same oxidation process that rusts our cars also deteriorates our bodies. Antioxidants mop up highly charged oxygen-free radicals that cause this sort of rust.

But as our production started ramping up, we became aware of the very potent antioxidant properties of natural astaxanthin, and as we did more research and started looking more at the scientific literature, we found that natural astaxanthin has three very unique properties: first of all, it's an extremely potent antioxidant. Some studies have shown over 500 times stronger than vitamin E. It's also anti-inflammatory, and third it crosses the blood-brain barrier and delivers these health benefits to the central nervous system. |

REPPED: On the heels of a bizarre announcement from the American Heart Association that people should not use antioxidant supplements to prevent heart disease, the Council for Responsible Nutrition has replied with a review of epidemiologic studies that shows strong support for the use of vitamin E and other antioxidants in reducing the risk of major coronary disease. One study that reviewed 80,000 nurses who took vitamin E supplements showed a 41% reduction in the risk of major coronary disease. |

For example, in broccoli, there's a chemical called sulforaphane, and it clearly activates stress response pathways in cells that upregulate antioxidant enzymes. Broccoli has antioxidants, but at the level you could get from your diet, they're not going to function as antioxidants."
Just as with the nuclear shipyard workers, a mild toxin generates an adaptive stress response that bolsters cells. It's the same process generated by dietary restriction and exercise. |

Aloe vera amplifies the antioxidant effects of vitamins
This is an especially interesting effect of aloe: It makes vitamin C, vitamin E and other antioxidants work better! It actually potentiates antioxidants, probably due to its effect on enhancing blood quality and allowing the blood to more effectively transport oxygen and nutrients to the body's cells. In fact, it is my belief that aloe vera makes everything nutritious work better due to its blood-enhancing effects. If I'm right about that, it means aloe can potentiate anti-cancer herbs, too, helping them more effectively target tumors. |

Chocolate contains antioxidant flavonoid phenolics, which prevent it from going rancid. In this and certain other plant foods (such as many leafy vegetables, tea, and red wine), these antioxidants help prevent the oxidation of LDS ("bad") cholesterol; when the latter becomes oxidized, it can cause atherosclerosis—gradual blocking of the arteries—by increasing the ability of the blood platelets to form clots. The most important flavonoid compound in chocolate appears to be quercetin, known to have not only antioxidant but also anti-inflammatory activity. |

On its face, this seems to make sense, since antioxidant molecules (which plants naturally produce for protection from the highly reactive oxygen atoms generated through photosynthesis) are thought to neutralize the free radicals in our bodies, which can damage DNA and lead to cell death and tissue damage. Unfortunately, antioxidants only appear to have such an effect when extracted from organic foods as part of our normal diet. Supplements have been shown to be inert, and potentially even damaging. |

Or it could be we isolated the wrong antioxidant. Beta is just one of a whole slew of carotenes found in common vegetables; maybe we focused on the wrong one. Or maybe beta-carotene works as an antioxidant only in concert with some other plant chemical or process; under other circumstances it may behave as a pro-oxidant.
Indeed, to look at the chemical composition of any common food plant is to realize just how much complexity lurks within it. |

A researcher in Pretoria, South Africa analyzed the antioxidant or "radical scavenging capacity" of a variety of fruits, vegetables, and teas. The study results showed that one or two cups of tea, made from green, black, or oolong tea, provide a similar antioxidant ability as five servings of fruits and vegetables or 400 milligrams of vitamin C.13 Of course these results were in the laboratory: The author of the study urged caution in applying these results to humans because the bioavailability of the vitamin C would depend on a host of factors. |

And it seems like it's directed at a large number of health effects, but if you look at the underlying cause of these health problems, it's all free radicals, and so it's really the antioxidant capability of Bioastin to get in and quench free radicals. With rheumatoid arthritis it's an immune rejection of joints, and the first immune response of the body is to generate free radicals to try and kill something bad from the body. Bioastin tends to neutralize these free radicals that rheumatoid arthritis is creating. |

Want more antioxidant protection? Pycnogenols-combinations of polyphenols from tree bark and alpha lipoic acid-are superb antioxidants, as are mushroom extracts, especially reishi, cordyceps, or maitake. All enhance immune-system function, elevate the level of natural killer cells (another type of white blood cell that protect us), and improve athletic performance. Cordyceps, originally only grown in Tibet and used solely by the Imperial family, were the secret natural performance enhancer used by Chinese Olympic athletes when the nation reentered the games. |

Adrenochrome also generates numerous free radicals, causing oxidative stress, eventually exhausting the schizophrenic antioxidant defense systems, creating deficiencies of glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase. Complicating the impacts of high adrenochrome conversion from adrenaline are the numerous interactions that normally occur between triiodothyronine, serotonin, and the three major components of the antioxidant defense system.24
In the early 1950s, Dr Hoffer and Dr Osmond showed that the production of adrenochrome could be reduced by high doses of niacin. |

Yet as soon as you remove these crucial molecules from the context of the whole foods they're found in, as we've done in creating antioxidant supplements, they don't seem to work at all. Indeed, in the case of beta-carotene ingested as a supplement, one study has suggested that in some people it may actually increase the risk of certain cancers. Big oops.
What's going on here? We don't know. It could be the vagaries of human digestion. Maybe the fiber (or some other component) in a carrot protects the antioxidant molecule from destruction by stomach acids early in the digestive process. |

This Salmon Essentials astaxanthin product can help you get more healthy sun exposure by giving you a potent antioxidant that acts as an internal sunscreen, but don't run out into the sun after popping a couple of these pills, thinking that you're immune to sunburn now. It can actually take some time to build up the antioxidant level in your tissues. In my experience, it takes 30 days of intense nutritional supplementation to raise the antioxidant levels in your tissues.
