Common vitamins no help for women's hearts - study
Turning truth upside down
Of course, the idea that antioxidants are useless for preventing disease is as absurd as thinking the Earth is the center of the universe, or that pigs can fly. |
| As you read these, keep in mind that these are stories based on a study that actually found significant protective benefits for those women who took the antioxidants:

These results indicate that the presence of lipid can markedly alter the protective effects of antioxidants with respect to potentially carcinogenic nitrosative chemistry occurring in the human stomach, and illustrate how a diet rich in lipids can directly influence gastric biochemistry," said lead author Emilie Combet.
Lipids are substances of the fat group and are insoluble in water. |

REPPED: Following yesterday's announcement of a new study showing the phenomenal benefits of antioxidants for preventing heart disease in women, the mainstream media rallied behind a blatantly false distortion of the study designed to convince the public that vitamins E and C are somehow useless. The popular press, which maintains an incestuous relationship with the pharmaceutical industry, once again demonstrates it is little more than a mouthpiece for the pro-pharma propaganda machine. |
| I wonder why they even bothered to give antioxidants to the participating women at all. If you're going to count the results of all the women who don't take the supplements, why not simply launch the study, give vitamins to no one, then announce the conclusion that vitamins don't work? This could create a whole new way to conduct clinical research: Track the health results in people who have taken nothing! |

As you know, antioxidants are very good for the body. We have our own natural antioxidants. I think of antioxidants as kind of police officers of the body -- they prevent free radicals from wreaking havoc in your body resulting in atherosclerosis, blockage of the pipes, malignancies, cancer, aging and all the processes that are related to having these free radicals in the body. antioxidants inhibit them and suppress them. There are advantages besides just raising HDL here.
I think what's important is that you have to eat a good diet. |

However, once people were convinced that antioxidants could help prevent cancer and heart disease and that antioxidants could be obtained through vitamins, it became fixed in their minds. But the studies showing the link between cancer and antioxidants in produce have been out for at least ten years, so it's hard to understand why they aren't better known. Certainly vitamin manufacturers do not want the studies publicized, but public health officials should have an interest in making sure the knowledge is widely distributed to the public. |

Cocoa carries flavonoids, particularly potent antioxidants that can zap free radicals and protect against inflammation. (The best way to consume cocoa is to add plain cocoa powder—preferably non-Dutched cocoa; Dutched cocoa is treated with an alkali during processing—into chili or other Southwestern recipes, thus avoiding the sugar in chocolate bars. If you eat chocolate, make sure it's dark or extra dark chocolate with 60 to 80 percent cocoa solids and that it has low sugar content.) Small red beans, kidney beans, and black beans are also packed with antioxidants. |

| This particular distortion was achieved by counting the results of all the women who did NOT take the antioxidants. If you look at the total outcomes and include the women who took no antioxidants, then of course the results don't look very impressive. Another thing you can do from a nutritional standpoint to enhance your cardiovascular health is to be sure to take a plentiful supply of antioxidants. Of course you want to get those from natural sources, and some of the best sources of antioxidants are berries, such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and so on. You can also get antioxidants from superfoods such as various sprouts, Spirulina, Chlorella, and seaweed.
One of my favorite sources of antioxidants is a substance I'm calling Vitamin X. It is known as astaxanthin. Astaxanthin is just now emerging on the scene. |

Here are some of the health headlines that appeared earlier this week in the twisted universe of Allopathia:
Antioxidants will kill you
All this week, the news outlets in Allopathia were reporting that antioxidants greatly increased the rate of skin cancer. Nutrition, it seems, actually causes cancer in Allopathia, and the only way for people living in that alternate universe to protect themselves from skin cancer is to coat themselves with synthetic chemicals that, in our universe, actually cause cancer! But in Allopathia, those chemicals are apparently inert. |

In a 2001 double-blind study, over 3,600 people suffering from age-related macular degeneration were randomly given antioxidants, zinc, antioxidants plus zinc, or a placebo.26 All took their supplements for a little over six years. Compared to placebo, the zinc reduced the risk of developing advanced macular degeneration by 25 percent. Zinc plus antioxidants lowered the risk by 28 percent.
Daily Requirement
The RDA for zinc is 11 mg per day for men ages 19 and up and 8 mg per day for women ages 19 and over. |

Antioxidants are most easily available in the fruits and vegetables we eat. Blue-green algae (available at most health-food stores) contains omega fatty acids and the antioxidant phycocyanin and works similarly to a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug like ibuprofen. Cranberries, blueberries, cherries, and blackberries are jam-packed with antioxidants called anthocyanins and polyphenols, which also have anti-inflammatory qualities. Leafy greens such as kale and spinach contain lutein, another superantioxidant. |

WHY VITAMINS ARE GOOD-AND BAD-FOR YOU
How about the antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and other anti-aging supplements I've recommended? Many studies have suggested that in high doses, antioxidants may turn into "pro-oxidants,"10 meaning that they actually promote the oxidation that can damage organs and stimulate the aging process. This research fuels the ongoing debate about whether vitamins and other supplements are good for you. At a certain dose, almost all vitamins, minerals, and other supplements show toxic side effects. |

What about chocolate and antioxidants, a subject which has been much in the news? Chocolate contains antioxidant flavonoid phenolics, which prevent it from going rancid. In this and certain other plant foods (such as many leafy vegetables, tea, and red wine), these antioxidants help prevent the oxidation of LDS ("bad") cholesterol; when the latter becomes oxidized, it can cause atherosclerosis—gradual blocking of the arteries—by increasing the ability of the blood platelets to form clots. |

If you do that, it is crucial that you supplement with superfoods and high levels of antioxidants. If you don't have high levels of antioxidants in your tissues, you may suffer skin damage from excessive ultraviolet radiation. By taking high levels of antioxidants, however, you will build up an internal sunscreen, and your skin's response to sun exposure will be very different. It will be healthy and adaptive, meaning that you won't burn. Instead, you will tan. This is true even if you've never tanned in your life. |

Aloe vera amplifies the antioxidant effects of vitamins
This is an especially interesting effect of aloe: It makes vitamin C, vitamin E and other antioxidants work better! It actually potentiates antioxidants, probably due to its effect on enhancing blood quality and allowing the blood to more effectively transport oxygen and nutrients to the body's cells. In fact, it is my belief that aloe vera makes everything nutritious work better due to its blood-enhancing effects. If I'm right about that, it means aloe can potentiate anti-cancer herbs, too, helping them more effectively target tumors. |

And right now, you're witnessing yet another attempt to disinform the public about the promise of antioxidants.
Personally, I take antioxidants every day. I also eat raw foods, drink superfood smoothies and avoid all prescription drugs. And I have yet to meet any person on pharmaceuticals who even compares to the level of health that I (and many others like me) experience on a daily basis. You show me somebody taking twelve prescription drugs, and I'll show you someone with a toxic liver, impaired brain function, stressed kidneys and unhealthy blood. Drugs don't make people healthy. |

ALA scavenges hydroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen and hypochlorous acid, can remove heavy metals by chelation and regenerates other antioxidants like glutathione, vitamin C, ubi-quinol (coenzyme Q10) and indirectly, vitamin E - as such it is an ideal chelator. A very recent study of children living in the area affected by the Chernobyl disaster also showed that ALA prevents radiation damage.12 Alpha-lipoic acid and its cousin DHLA have justly been referred to as the "universal antioxidants". |

Anyone who thinks drugs are the answer -- and that antioxidants are useless -- is probably suffering from the cognitive impairment side effects of drugs they're on right now. You'd have to be truly out of your mind to think that plant-based nutrition has no role in human health and that only pharmaceuticals can prevent disease.
Yet this remains the dominant mindset in conventional medicine today. It is a mindset based on deliberate falsehoods, scientific distortion and outright lies. And right now, you're witnessing yet another attempt to disinform the public about the promise of antioxidants. |

Nine out of ten patients whose blood scores had plummeted in earlier courses of drugs achieved stable levels when they were given high-dose antioxidants. (446)
Note: you should not take high doses of fat-soluble vitamins, such as A and E, unless under a doctor's care, since they can accumulate in the body and become toxic.
After these studies were done, it was business as usual in the world of conventional cancer treatment. No follow-up studies were done and few cancer patients have ever heard about it. Only holistic physicians such as Robert Atkins, M.D. |
